Common childhood injuries
Common childhood injuries like falls, minor cuts, bruises and scrapes are normal part of growing kid’s life. During first few years of life, curious kids explore environment in their own way and learn new skills. Minor childhood injuries happen, when kids learn to walk or learn new skills like cycling and biking. Young kids and toddlers are more prone to common childhood injuries (like falls) as they have lack of balance and control in their movements.
These common childhood injuries should be more likely to be the kind of that a hug-kiss and band-aid should fix it, rather than emergency visit to hospitals.
Unfortunately, childhood injuries are one of the major causes of death in children aged under 1-14 years. But on brighter side, most of these common childhood injuries can be prevented. by keeping a good level of precautions and protections, parents and caregivers can keep their kids safe.

Here are some of the common causes of childhood injuries:
Falls: falls are the most common causes of childhood injuries. Falls from stairs, beds and cluttered pathways results in childhood injuries. Routine blow and falls did not require any specific treatment (just cleanse the injured area, apply the anti-septic and if needed put a band-aid), but in some cases, falls can cause serious injuries like bone fracture and head injuries and requires immediate medical treatment.
Minor cuts, scrapes and bruises: minor cuts, scrapes and bruises are second common cause of childhood injuries. Hands, elbows and knees are most common places that affected by bruises and scrapes.
Burns: burns are another common childhood injury that happen as unintentional accidents. Burn injuries commonly caused by hot liquids (hot water, tea or coffee), hot steam, candles, fireworks, grills etc.
Superficial burn (first degree burn) is characterized by involvement of superficial layer of skin without blister formation and get cured within few days by proper home care measures like application of antibiotic ointment and keeping a watch on signs of infections. Second- and third-degree burns are more dangerous and require immediate medical treatment.
Animal bite and insect strings: these injuries may range from minor scratches and red bumpy skin to life threatening complications (due to severe allergic reactions). Treatment is depending upon severity of animal bite and insect strings.
Foreign body injuries: this is common in infants and young kids. They may put foreign objects like crayons, cotton, small toys, seeds and beans into their nose, mouth and ear and may cause serious infections and even air way chocking caused by obstruction of air ways by foreign body.
Along with these, here are some more common causes of childhood injuries:
- Sprains and strains
- Fractures and dislocation of joints
- Head injuries (concussion)
