This is day 3 of #BlogchatterA2Z and as alphabet “C”, I am talking about “Common childhood injuries”. What are common causes of childhood injuries? And which are best homeopathic remedies for treating “Common childhood injuries”? Read the post to know more! 

Common childhood injuries 

Common childhood injuries like falls, minor cuts, bruises and scrapes are normal part of growing kid’s life. During first few years of life, curious kids explore environment in their own way and learn new skills. Minor childhood injuries happen, when kids learn to walk or learn new skills like cycling and biking. Young kids and toddlers are more prone to common childhood injuries (like falls) as they have lack of balance and control in their movements.  

These common childhood injuries should be more likely to be the kind of that a hug-kiss and band-aid should fix it, rather than emergency visit to hospitals. 

Unfortunately, childhood injuries are one of the major causes of death in children aged under 1-14 years. But on brighter side, most of these common childhood injuries can be prevented. by keeping a good level of precautions and protections, parents and caregivers can keep their kids safe.  

Common causes of childhood injuries 

Here are some of the common causes of childhood injuries:  

Falls: falls are the most common causes of childhood injuries. Falls from stairs, beds and cluttered pathways results in childhood injuries. Routine blow and falls did not require any specific treatment (just cleanse the injured area, apply the anti-septic and if needed put a band-aid), but in some cases, falls can cause serious injuries like bone fracture and head injuries and requires immediate medical treatment.  

Minor cuts, scrapes and bruises: minor cuts, scrapes and bruises are second common cause of childhood injuries. Hands, elbows and knees are most common places that affected by bruises and scrapes.  

Burns:  burns are another common childhood injury that happen as unintentional accidents. Burn injuries commonly caused by hot liquids (hot water, tea or coffee), hot steam, candles, fireworks, grills etc.  

Superficial burn (first degree burn) is characterized by involvement of superficial layer of skin without blister formation and get cured within few days by proper home care measures like application of antibiotic ointment and keeping a watch on signs of infections. Second- and third-degree burns are more dangerous and require immediate medical treatment.  

Animal bite and insect strings: these injuries may range from minor scratches and red bumpy skin to life threatening complications (due to severe allergic reactions). Treatment is depending upon severity of animal bite and insect strings.  

Foreign body injuries: this is common in infants and young kids. They may put foreign objects like crayons, cotton, small toys, seeds and beans into their nose, mouth and ear and may cause serious infections and even air way chocking caused by obstruction of air ways by foreign body.  

Along with these, here are some more common causes of childhood injuries: 

  • Sprains and strains  
  • Fractures and dislocation of joints  
  • Head injuries (concussion)  
  • Drowning  
  • Poisoning  
  • Suffocation and chocking

Childhood injuries can be prevented up to a major extent by practicing certain practices such as create a safe-child friendly environment by removing danger, adding safety measures, choosing child safe equipment and teaching your kids (older kids) to avoid danger and protect themselves.   Here is the list and indication of common homeopathic remedies for treatment of common childhood injuries.  

  Arnica– Arnica is the first remedy that used as an acute emergency remedy, especially in case of trauma, fall and bruising injuries. It helps reduce shock, relive pain, swelling and other signs of inflammation. It fastens the healing process. It remarkably improves pain and bruised sensation in kids after a routine fall. It is also an excellent remedy for before and after surgical and dental treatment.  

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

  Hypericum– kids often crushed their fingers in a door while playing. it causes unbearable shooting pain. Hypericum is an excellent remedy for injuries to nerve or parts of body that had rich nerve supply, such as finger, toes and spine.  

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

  Ledum pal– Ledum pal is used for punctured wound (from needle, nail or sharp object) injuries. this is another common childhood injury that causes agonizing pain and other signs of inflammation in kids. Of course, it is important to give immediate medical attention and take conventional medical treatment to avoid complications.  But a dose of Ledum pal should be administered for prevention of tetanus. It is also a good remedy for insect bites. 

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

Ruta- Ruta is a great remedy for all kinds of sports injuries. It can be used successfully in the treatment of injuries to ligament, tendon, periosteum or lining of the bone. Any injury to knee, thigh or elbow, when ligament or tendon pulled out, can be greatly helped by this remedy.   

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

 Calendula :it is a “Homeopathic antiseptic remedy” and must be a part of a first-aid homeopathic kit. Whenever skin surface is broken and the open wound is developed, it works great. It inhibits infection and promotes the healing process. It can be used internally as well as externally in the form of mother tincture or lotion. 

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

Symphytum– it is a great “bone remedy” that help the fracture to heal more quickly. It is necessary to do all routine medical procedures (x-ray, splinting or surgery according to condition) in case of broken bone, but as an alternative medicine Symphytum helps a lot in fastening the healing the process.  

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

 Rhus tox– it is also known as “poison ivy”. It is another amazing remedy for the sprain, shoulder, back and neck injuries, especially when characteristic symptom “worse from first motion and relived by continuous motion” is present”. The patient is usually chilly and complaint worse by cold weather.   

Dose: 200 potency, 4-5 globules 4 times a day. Repeat frequently, in case of acute condition.

Homeopathic combination

It is an excellent combination remedy for relieving minor joint pain or muscular pain due to injuries, sprains and bruising. It contains Arnica 3X, Belladona 4X, Calendula 3X and many other wonderful remedies to for fasten the healing process.  take 10-15 drops in few TSP of luke warm water 1-3 times a day.

External application 

Even though basic homeopathic principal emphasis mainly on internal administration of indicated remedy but nowadays certain medicines are available in the form of a gel, ointment or spray for external application to fasten the cure.  

  These are:

It acts as an antiseptic and available in the form of spray, gel, and ointment and mother tincture. It has great skin healing properties and has a soothing effect on cuts, sores and general skin abrasion. You can use Calendula Q like Dettol to clean the injured area. Mixed 10 drops of calendula Q in Luke warm water and wash the injured area and then apply Calendula ointment 2-3 days a day, until healing occur.

It is available in the form of gel and ointment. Arnica gel is quickly absorbed by the skin and has a cooling effect for fast pain relief. It reduces muscle pain and stiffness due to overexertion and minor injuries. Apply it locally on clean, dry area for 2-3 days a day.

It is useful for nerve injuries caused by punctured, incised or lacerated wound. apply it locally on clean, dry affected area 2-3 days a day.

  Note- mother tincture should be diluted with water before application for the better result.
