Hair loss: common causes, symptoms & homeopathic treatment

Hi everyone! 

It is day 8 of #BlogchatterA2Z and as “H”, I am talking about another common disease condition. As “H”, I am talking about “Hair fall”. What are causes and types of hair fall? What is scope of homeopathy in treating hair fall condition? Read the post to know more! 

What is hair fall? 

Hair fall means loosening of hairs from scalp excessively due to any reason.  it is often associated with other symptoms like thinning of hair and development of patches on scalp due to falling hair. Falling of 50-100 hair is considered normal.  

Each hair follicle has its own life cycle. Hair follicles, grow, then rest for few months, then they shed and start regrowing.  When due to some reason, this cycle gets interrupt, and results in increasing number of hairs fall and a smaller number of re-growing new hair, then the condition of excessive hair loss appears.  

Hair loss could be mild or severe in nature depending upon the underlying cause of hair loss.  

 Hair fall is one of the most common problem that affect large number of people all across the globe. Men are more affected than women.  

Usually, hair fall is considered as a cosmetic problem only and people often try various kinds of cosmetic treatments to reduce hair fall but in real sense, the cause of hair fall is not only cosmetic. Usually, there is some underlying cause like Nutritional deficiency (protein and iron) is present, that causes hair loss.  

Types of hair fall  

Here are some common types of hair fall:  

Involutional alopecia 

This type of hair loss is a natural condition that happen with the age. With aging, hair follicles go in resting phase and remaining hair become shorter and fewer in number.  

Androgenic alopecia 

This is most common type of hair loss that affect large number of males and females worldwide. This type of hair loss is caused by hereditary factors. People who have a history of hair fall running in their family are more prone to suffer from hair fall. In males, it is called “Male pattern baldness” and resulting in receding of hair line and may causes bald patches on scalp. 

 In female, it is called “female pattern baldness” and results in thinning of hair and less likely caused baldness. Androgenic alopecia can begin any time after the age of puberty and progress as serious hair loss or baldness (specially in males) in upcoming years. Brighter side, this kind of hair loss is easily treatable and respond well to medication. 

Telogen effluvium  

This is another common type of hair loss that is caused as a result of any particular medical event or disease conditions such as hair fall occur after delivery, or after any surgery.  

Alopecia areata 

This is a kind of autoimmune disorder where body’s immune system mistakenly acts against hair follicles and causing hair loss on the scalp and also from other parts of body. Genetic factor is usually the cause behind this type of hair loss. It can affect male and female both and results in one or more round patches of hair loss.  

Alopecia totalis 

This type of hair loss is defined by the complete loss of scalp hair. It is advanced form of alopecia areata. 

Alopecia universalis 

This type of hair loss causes hair loss from all body parts (including eyebrow, eyelashes and pubic hair)

Here are some common causes of hair fall.  

  • Age: with aging, hair thinning, graying of hair and in many cases, hair fall is a common symptom. 
  • Hereditary: this is most common cause of hair fall worldwide. It affects male and female both. In male it is called “male pattern baldness” and in female, it is called “female pattern baldness”. Medically, this condition is called “Androgenic alopecia”.  
  • Hormonal changes: hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause are major cause of hair fall in women.  
  •  Diseases of scalp: there are many types of scalp diseases and infections like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and ringworm infection that causes burning, itching and swelling in scalp and also results in hair loss.  
  • Hair fall caused by some systemic disease such as PCOD, and thyroid disorders. These diseases cause hormonal imbalance in body, and thus results in hair loss.  
  • Nutritional deficiency: nutrition deficiency is another major cause of hair loss. Deficiency of vitamin B, protein, iron and folic acid results in hair fall.  
  • Side effect of certain medication and treatment: certain medication like chemotherapy for treating cancer causes hair loss as a side effect.  
  • According to some scientific study, Increased Vitamin A intake may cause hair loss.  
  • Higher level of stress and anxiety also results in hair fall.  
  • Harsh Chemical treatment (like perming, hair coloring) destroy the normal texture of hairs and causes hair fall.  
  • Restricted diet (for achieving rapid loss) that lack in protein also causes hair fall in some cases.

  • Falling of hair in bunches  
  • Thinning of hair  
  • Receding of hair line  
  • Formation of bald patches on scalp  
  • Dandruff, itching or other scalp related issues like eczema and ringworms  
  • Hair loss from other parts of body (in case of alopecia universalis) 
  • Increased level of stress and anxiety due to hair loss  
  • Lower self-esteem and lower level of self-confidence due to hair loss 

Self-care tips 

  • Be gentle with your hair. Use wide toothed comb, if you are prone to hair fall. Handle your hair gently. 
  • Pay proper attention to your diet. Try to include all essential nutrients (iron, vitamins and protein) in your diet to prevent and treat hair fall.  
  • Exercise regularly. Yoga and meditation have shown promising results in improving hair health by improving our overall health and wellbeing.  
  • Avoid harsh chemical treatment and use of hair styling products.  
  • Use herbal based gentle shampoo and hair oil for hair care. Some herbs like amla and shikakai had shown good results in reducing hair fall and improving hair texture.  
  • Massage your hair with oil, it improves blood circulation of scalp and helps in hair re growth.  
  • Protect your hair from direct sunlight and other sources of ultraviolet light by wearing a hat or cap.  
  • Limit or stop smoking. Smoking is one of the most important lifestyle factors that aggravate hair fall.  

Homeopathic treatment 

Homeopathy is an effective choice of treatment for hair loss. For getting effective results, it is very important to know the cause of hair loss and know the individual symptoms of patient.  

Here are some common remedies that gives great results in treating hair fall depending upon underlying cause of hair loss. 

  • Natrum mur: Naturm mur is an excellent remedy for hair loss in female after delivery. When patient has a history of loss of fluid (like after delivery or any surgery), Natrum mur works best. It is also good for anemic patients who have an irritable temperament and craving for salty food.  
  • Acid phos: acid phos is a great remedy for hair loss happen after any debilitating disease like typhoid. Patient feels very weak and has desire for cold and refreshing drinks.  
  • Cal phos: when hair fall happen in bunches and patient has symptom of general weakness. Also, good remedy for hair fall in anemic and weak teenagers who also suffer from acne and headache.  
  • Lycopodium: it works best when hair fall associated with gastric troubles. Also, a good remedy for premature graying of hair.  
  • Vinca minor: when there is excessive oiliness of scalp is present along with hair fall.  
  • Thuja: when hair fall is present with dandruff. Great remedy for “male pattern baldness”.  

Apart from above mentioned remedies, there are so many other homeopathic remedies are available to treat the hair fall. Each remedy works best, when selected on the basis of individual symptoms. So, here I am not listing all those remedies.  

Instead, I am listing few homeopathic remedy and combinations that work great in general reducing hair fall.  

Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is an excellent remedy for treating hair loss. It is more suitable for female then male and works great in reducing hair fall and even useful for premature graying of hair.  

Dose: 30c potency, 2 drops, 2-3 times a day.  

Homeopathic combinations

This R89 hair care drop is specially formulated for treating various hair related issues like alopecia, baldness, premature graying of hair etc. it contains many great remedies like Alfaalfa, kali phos, polysorbatum and many others, and work great in reducing hair fall and other hair related issues.  

Dose: 20-30 drops daily 3 times a day. Once a day, massage into bald area for 5 minutes.  

External application 

Here are some great options for external application to treat hair fall.

Jaborandi is an excellent remedy for treating all kinds of hair problems like general hair fall, androgenic alopecia, dryness of hair and even split end. Use Jaborandi mother tincture for external application to get best results. 

Dose: take any fragrance-free oil (preferably coconut or olive oil) in 30 Ml quantity and mixed 20-40 drops of jaborandi Q in it. Mixed well, before every application. Massage gently with this oil, at least 2 times a day.  

SBL’s hair oil and hair shampoo

This is an excellent combo of homeopathic preparation for use of external application. It helps in prevention and treatment of hair fall, splitting of hair, premature graying of hair and dandruff. For best results, use both products all together.

This one is another great option for hair fall, using as an external application. It enhances the blood circulation of scalp area and helpful in case of premature graying and hair fall. For best results, use both products all together. 

Special note 

Hair fall is one of those complaint that did not give any immediate response to medicinal treatment. You have to patient and has to take regular medication for at least 2-3 months (in some case, may be longer) to get the desirable and visible results.  

Along with medication, it is equally important to pay a good attention on your diet and nutrition. Taking enough protein, vitamins and minerals in your diet, work great in reducing hair fall.
