What is wart?

As per definition, wart is a small growth on the skin or on the mucous membrane caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). It is a common condition that affect large number of populations worldwide. Usually, it is a non-dangerous and treatable condition. In 65% of cases, wart disappears on their own without any treatment and did not cause any other residual symptoms behind.

Causative factor

Wart is caused by infection of HPV (Human papilloma virus) by either direct contact and by person-to-person contact. It takes usually 3-6 weeks of time to develop the symptoms after getting infected with HPV.  people with weakened immune system are more prone to get infected by HPV. Also, kids and teenagers are at higher risk of developing warts as they may not have developed immunity against virus.

People who are suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes and those who have weakened immune system due to HIV infection (AIDS patients) are more prone to get affected by HPV infection.

Wart patients may have a history of visit to spa or saloon. The lack of maintenance of hygiene factors (Towels, sponge etc.) may cause HPV infection.

Types of warts

There are different types of warts. As per their location and other characteristics, here are some common types of wart present.

Warts type as per their location

  • Common wart: they can affect any part of skin, mostly on fingers and toes.

Warts types as per their appearance

  • Filiform wart: they have a thread like appearance and grow with a fast rate.
  • Flat wart: they are smaller in size and smoother than other type of warts
  • Pedunculated (Cauliflower like) wart: they are flesh-colored and can be flat or look bumpy like cauliflower. They appear on head, neck, scalp and on  beard.

Symptoms

Usually, wart appear as an over growth or bump on skin and vary in appearance. They may appear as a single large wart or group of small, multiple warts. They also have different shape and colors such as flat, granular, rough or dome shaped. May have gray, flash colored, white, pink or skin color. In most of the cases, they are painless but, in some cases, they may have associated symptoms like pain and itching. Cosmetic reasons (ugly looking) are most prominent cause for people to seek treatment for warts.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made mostly by physical examination only and there is no need to conduct any other specific tests (lab or x-ray) for conforming the diagnosis of wart. But in case of genital wart, it is more serious as it could be a sign of cancerous growth. Specially in female, it could be a sign of cervical cancer. In those cases, doctor performs other tests like biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and rule out the possibility of cancerous condition.

Traditional treatment

Traditional treatment of wart consists of various methods such as:

  • Use of over-the-counter medication, wart removal cream that contain salicylic acid.
  • Laser therapy, that involves use of laser light to heat and destroy tiny blood vessels inside the wart.

I thought warts happen due to cholesterol issue, thanks for sharing facts behind it’s emergence. I am so glad to know it’s homeopathy treatment. Is skin tag and warts are same Surbhi?

    • admin

No dear skin tags and warts are not same. skin tags are caused by repeated fiction on skin . they usually on surface and non contagious. tags usually have a little hang down appearance and there is no serious pathogen or organism factor is responsible for this. while warts are caused by HPV ( human papilloma virus), they are contagious and situated little deeper in skin. yes, warts and skin tags may seem confusing but best part is that none of these cause serious complications. many people take treatment only for cosmetic reasons. thanks dear for reading the post and sharing your thoughts.
