This is day 11 of #BlogchatterA2Z and as alphabet “K”, I am sharing details about another common disease condition. As “K”, I am talking about keloid? 

What is keloid? What are causes and symptoms? And what is scope of homeopathy in treating keloid? Read the post to know more.  

What is keloid?

As per definition, keloid are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules formed at the site of a scar or injury. The color of keloid can vary from pink to the color of the person’s skin or red to dark brown in color.  

It is formed by overgrowth of scar tissues on any kind of injury site. After any kind of injuries or body piercing (like tattoo or ear piercing), as a normal healing process, scar tissues are formed, but in some cases, this scar tissues grow longer than normal scar, resulting in raised scar area. This raised scar area is called keloid. Keloid are usually benign in nature.  

Keloids can form on earlobes, chest, back, hand, shoulders and cheeks. They usually did not cause any adverse effect for health, but they look ugly and create a problem as cosmetic appearance. Many people want to take keloid treatment only for cosmetic reasons.

Here are some common factors that increase the chances of getting keloid formation.  

  • Genetic disposition: Keloid formation has a genetic disposition. People who have a history of keloid formation in their family are more prone to get keloid.  
  • Dark skin: Also, it is more common in people with dark skin.  
  • Ethnicity: ethnicity is another factor that make person prone to get keloid. People who are  Latin ,African and Asian origin is more prone to get keloid 
  • Age: Keloid is more common in people under the age of 30.  

Cause of keloid formation 

Keloid is formed as an overgrowing scar tissue on any kind of skin injury site. Acne scar, burns, chickenpox, scratches, vaccination sites, ear piercing surgical incisions are most common cause of keloid formation.  

Symptoms 

Keloid grow slowly and it takes from few months to years to develop keloid on any injury or body piercing site. Other symptoms are:  

  • Appearance of lumpy, raised and enlarge scar tissue on injury site.  
  • It may have shiny appearance with smooth or hard texture, with red, pink or brown in color.  
  • During initial phase of growing, keloid may have symptoms of itchy skin. Usually, itching disappears when scar tissues grow enough.  
  • Look ugly and cause a cosmetic concern for people.  
  • Affected person may suffer from low self-esteem and lower confidence due to keloid.  
  • When left untreated for long time, it can grow harder and can restrict movement (it happens mostly when keloid is formed on joints)  

Diagnosis 

Diagnosis is usually made on the basis of physical symptoms, appearance and clinical examination. In some cases, doctor perform skin biopsy, when they suspect some other reason. Behind the keloid formation.  

Conventional Treatment 

The traditional treatment of keloid involved various methods like corticosteroid injection on keloid site, laser therapy, cryotherapy (use of nitrogen to burn the keloid scar tissue), use of silicon pad, surgical removal of keloid.  

Sadly, keloid scars have a tendency of re-grow and re-appearance. Even after surgical removal, keloid re-grow again after few years. The re-growing is more common in people who have a genetic disposition to grow keloid.  

Prevention 

Prevention is an important aspect of keloid. Here are few important steps that can help a lot in prevention of keloid scar.  

  •  People who have a family history or ethnic disposition to develop keloid scars, should avoid body piercing, or tattoo. Also, if they done ear piercing, use pressure earnings. 
  • Take a proper care of new wound area. Apply silicon bandage to keep an even pressure on the injured area. Wash the affected area properly with soap and water.  

Homeopathic treatment 

Homeopathy has a great scope in treatment of keloid scars. Here are some common remedies that gives wonderful results in treatment of keloid.  

Thiosinaminum

Thiosinaminum is one of the best remedies to treat keloid. This remedy has a strong capacity to dissolve scar tissue and work great in treating keloid. This remedy can be used as a general remedy and work good on treating keloid (irrespective of any cause). The remedy can be used in Q (mother tincture) and potentized form to treat keloid.  

Dose: 3X potency, 4 tablets, 3-4 times a day.  

Graphites

Graphites is second great remedy for treating keloid. Graphites is especially useful in early stage of keloid formation. It helps in absorbing the scar tissue and also help in dissolving the keloid formation. It also reduces the further growth of scar tissues. Also, when there is thin, sticky discharge comes out from keloid scar graphites work great.  

Dose: 30 potency 5-6 globules 2 times a day 

Thuja  occidentalis

Thuja is another best remedy for treating keloid. It works best when keloid is formed on vaccination site. Thuja is king of “Anti-psychotic” remedy. It works great in treating any kind of overgrowth in body.   

Dose: 200 potency, one dose only in morning  

Silicea

Silicea is another good remedy for treating keloid. Especially when keloid is painful, silicea works best. The patient is chilly and has excessive offensive sweating too. Silicea helps in dissolving unnecessary cicatricial tissue that causes keloid formation.  

Dose: 200 potency, one dose only in night 

Causticum

Causticum is another great remedy for keloid. It is specially indicated, when keloid formed after burn. Also, when complain get worse in cold-dry weather, causticum gives best result.  

Dose: 30 c potency, 5-6 globules, 2 –3 times a day 

Calendula officinalis

Calendula is another excellent remedy for treating keloid that occur after any surgical or accidental injuries (where skin is cut or broken due to any reasons). Calendula also work great as a preventive medicine too.  it helps in fast healing and help in least possible scar tissue formation.  

Dose: 30 potency, 5-6 globules, 2-3 times a day 

So, these were some common remedies to treat keloid. 

Special note 

In case of keloid treatment with homeopathy, along with other individual symptoms, the cause of keloid is main important factor that help in selecting a proper remedy.
