Obesity: causes, symptoms & homeopathic treatment

Hi, everyone

Welcome to day 12 of #BlogchatterA2Z and as “O”, I am talking about another common disease condition, “Obesity”.

What is obesity? What are causes and complications? What are preventive measures? And what is scope of homeopathic treatment in controlling obesity? Read the post to know more!

 What is Obesity?

As per definition, overweight and obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that represents, a risk to health. Body mass index is used as base to define obesity. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered as overweight and over 30, it is called obesity.

Obesity is so common worldwide and affect large number of populations worldwide.

Obesity primarily is not a dangerous disease and can be controlled effectively by improving lifestyle measures (diet control and regular exercise). But when left untreated, it could cause various serious lifestyle diseases ranging from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, even some type of cancerous condition too.

Important facts about obesity

Here are some important (and scary) facts about obesity.

As per WHO,

  • In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 650 million adults were obese.
  • In 2016, 39% of adults aged 18 years and over (39% of men and 40% of women) were overweight.
  • Overall, about 13% of the world’s adult population (11% of men and 15% of women) were obese in 2016.
  • The worldwide prevalence of obesity nearly tripled between 1975 and 2016.
  • Globally 8 % of death in 2017 is caused by obesity (that represents an increase from 4-5% from 1990)

Here are some common causes of obesity.

  • The major cause of obesity is poor lifestyle choices that includes eating of unhealthy, fried and junk food and sedentary lifestyle (lack of physical activities). These both factors are primary reason that first result in increasing weight and later on causes obesity and other associated symptoms and complications.
  • Family history of obesity is second common cause of obesity. Obesity usually runs in generation. The children of obese parents are usually suffered from obesity. The cause includes both genetic and lifestyle factors.
  • Some kind of systemic disease like thyroid disorder and PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) also causes obesity and vice versa is also true.
  • In some cases, arthritis or other joint and musculoskeletal diseases that reduces mobility and overall physical activities also results in obesity and increase weight.
  • Medications: certain medications like anticonvulsants and antidepressants may cause rapid weight gain and obesity.
  • Psychological factors: some people have a tendency of “emotional eating”, in response to deal with sadness, anger or other negative emotions. This emotional eating (usually of junk and unhealthy food) causes obesity in large number of populations.
  • High level of stress and lack of sleep has also been associated with increase weight gain and obesity.

How to measure obesity?

Though physical appearance and rapid weight gain is primary indication of obesity but for confirming diagnosis of obesity “BMI” calculation is one of the most commonly used tools.

Physician used “BMI” calculator as a first step to know the patient’s BMI by using three important factors age, height and weight. Read this post to know more about how to calculate your BMI?

Here are some guidelines from CDC that helps in defining obesity in to different categories:

  • If BMI is 25.0 to less than 30, it falls within overweight categories.
  • If BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls withing obesity range.
  • If BMI is 40.0 or higher, it is considered as “extreme or severe obesity”.

Symptoms

The common symptom of obesity is:

  • Increased deposition of fat cells on various parts of body including back, buttocks and belly.
  • Rapid weight gain
  • If there is severe obesity, it may result in limitation of movement and may worsen the existing state of obesity.
  • If obesity is associated with other systemic disorder (like diabetes, thyroid), the symptoms of associated disease conditions also present with obesity.
  • Shortness of breath, increase sweating and generalized exhaustion
  • Sleep disturbances due to snoring and in some cases sleep apnea

Obesity is the side-effect of an unhealthy lifestyle but can be genetic too. Good physical activity everyday and eating right food with controlled portions can help control it. BMI is a good measure of it. I trust it too.

Yes Anjali, Varsha said it right. if anyone is confused with body fat and body weight, BMI is the best way to confirm the diagnosis of obesity. it includes all important parameter like height, age, and then calculate our ideal weight . as I said in post, there in no magical treatment for obesity. healthy lifestyle ( diet and exercise) are only way to get good and consistent results,
