#BlogchatterA2Z- “N”- Nosebleed: causes, symptoms & homeopathic treatment!
Hi everyone
It is day 14 of #BlogchatterA2Z and as alphabet “N”, I am talking about another common disease condition and its homeopathic treatment.
As “N”, I am talking about “Nosebleed or epistaxis”. What is nosebleed or epistaxis? What are types and causes? What are associated symptoms? What is scope of homeopathy in treating nosebleed? Read the post to know more!
What is nosebleed?
As the name suggested, bleeding or hemorrhage from nose due to any reason is called nosebleed or epistaxis. It is one of the most common problem and at least 65% of people suffer from once or more from nosebleed during their lifetime. In most of the cases, nosebleed is not a serious medical issue and did not require any long-term medical treatment.
Children (age 2–10-year-old) and adults who suffer from hypertension or other bleeding disorders are more prone to suffer from nosebleed.
Pathology
Nose is a sensitive organ of body that has rich blood supply. There are many blood vessels that supply bloods to nose (specially the anterior part). This rich blood supply area is called the “Little’s area”. The location of nose (on front of face) and rich blood supply make this place to more prone for getting injured. Any injury or trauma or other factors (like hypertension) easily rupture the blood vessels and results in nosebleed or epitaxies.
Types of nose bleed
There are mainly two types of nosebleeds:
- Anterior nosebleed
- Posterior nosebleed
Anterior nosebleed
It is more common and less serious type of nosebleed. As the name suggested, it involves bleeding from anterior part of nose. This type of bleeding or hemorrhage is usually active (Bright red) in nature and get stopped by simple home care measures. Anterior nosebleed usually did not require any specific kind of treatment.
Posterior nosebleed
Posterior nosebleed is less common and more serious in nature. As the name suggested, it involves bleeding from posterior part of nose. Bleeding is usually passive (dark in color and may be clotted) in nature. The cause of posterior nosebleed could be other serious medical conditions like bleeding disorders. It requires proper set of diagnosis and treatment.
Causes of nosebleed
The cause of nosebleed could be varied from local to systemic. Depending upon the cause the symptoms and prognosis of nosebleed could varied as gentle to serious.
Here are some common causes of nosebleed.
- Trauma or injury to nose (blow, fall or accident)
- Hot weather or any kind of heat that creates a dryness in nasal area and results in nosebleed.
- Winter
- Nasal allergies or other nasal diseases like sinusitis or deviated septum also causes nosebleed
- Use of allergy controlling nasal spray also causes dryness in nasal cavity and results in nosebleed.
- Bleeding disorders
- Systemic disorder like hypertension
- High altitude
- anemia
Symptoms
The most common symptom of nosebleed is bleeding from nose. Other associated symptoms could be
- Vomiting
- Fainting
- Weakness
- Exhaustion
- Vertigo and dizziness (occasionally)
- Other symptoms of trauma and injury (if nosebleed caused by injury)
- Symptoms of hypertension ( if the cause of nosebleed is hypertenstion)
What to do as first aid to control nose bleed?
Here is a step-by-step instruction to control nosebleed at home.
First and most importantly, avoid lying down flat.
Second bend a little and lean your body forward. Take a tissue or damp washcloth to hold the bleeding. Now, squeeze both soft parts of nose by using thumb and finger. Avoid putting pressure on bony part of nose. Next, squeeze the both soft parts of nose and apply gentle pressure continuously unto 15-20 minutes. Take breath from mouth. In most of the cases bleeding gets stop from the step. Repeat the steps once more if bleeding did not get stop.
Additionally, you can use ice pack too for constricting blood vessels of nose.
Warning signs
- When bleeding did not get stop by using above mentioned method.
- Blood is large in quantity and active in nature.
- When patient has a history of hypertension or other serious bleeding disorder.
- Bleeding is result of serious head injury
- When bleeding is present with other serious systemic symptoms like vomiting and fever.

My son got nosebleed 2-3 times a couple of months back but we didn’t get a chance to ask about it with his pediatrician. I just told him not to put finger in his nose and not to blow it. Also, while sleeping I kept his head elevated and it got all better in a few days. Thanks for sharing this information about nosebleeds and the treatment, it will surely come handy.
