Writing as My Best Buddy (90s Kids’ Favorite Activity: Writing a Diary)

As a child of the 90s, I fondly remember the suggestion my dad made one evening over dinner. He handed me a small, colorful diary and encouraged me to jot down my day-to-day experiences. Initially, it was a playful hobby and a means to capture the little joys and adventures of childhood. From the excitement of a new bicycle to the triumph of a school quiz, my diary became the canvas for my young mind’s creativity.

This daily ritual was the starting point of writing journey and helped in developing my writing skills.  The act of putting thoughts into words, structuring sentences, and expressing emotions through written language not only honed my writing but also instilled a sense of discipline and introspection over the time. My diary became my best buddy during golden phase of childhood and always stayed with me as a silent companion in several moments of joy and sadness both.

Writing as My Pride Possession: High School to College

As I transitioned into my teenage years and eventually into college, writing evolved from a hobby into a pride possession. It was all started, when I participated in a story writing competition for a reputed newspaper. To my amazement, I won the Best budding writer award for my story submission. That recognition was a pivotal moment and ignited a newfound seriousness towards writing.

After this victory, my dad has encouraged me and suggested to write regularly as a contributing writer for various prestigious newspapers including Nai dunia, Nav Bharat and Dainik Bhaskar. Luckly, these newspapers have liked my submissions and I become a regular contributing writer for their prestigious platforms.

This trend continued throughout my high school and college years.

Writing for newspapers and magazines on a wide array of subjects, from book reviews to in-depth health articles has enriched my experience as a writer and allowed me to explore diverse topics. It was an exciting journey of learn something new every day and expressing my thoughts to a broader audience.

This period played a crucial role in building a well-rounded personality and enhances my knowledge on various subjects. I truly understood the power of words and the impact they could have on readers during these years.

Writing Helped Me to Restart My Career

After marriage, my life took a different turn as I got busy with my medical career. Writing took a backseat as I navigated the demands of my profession and personal life. However, in 2015, a significant change occurred when I moved from India to the USA due to my husband’s job. The move brought with it visa restrictions, which prevented me from working in the medical field.

During this period of professional hiatus, I decided to reignite my childhood love for writing. I started blogging to overcome the frustration caused by Visa related restriction and the rest, as they say, is history. Blogging opened up a whole new world for me. It became a platform to share my thoughts, experiences, and knowledge with a global audience. The response was overwhelming and encouraging and pushed me to write more and explore various topics.

Through blogging, I not only rediscovered my passion for writing but also carved out a new career path. Over the years, I have published four eBooks, each reflecting a different aspect of my journey and interests. Blogging has been instrumental in shaping my identity as a writer and has provided me with opportunities to grow and succeed in this field.

Writing Helped Me to Make New Friends and Connect with the Outer World in a Creative Way

This is one of the most rewarding aspects of writing. Writing Helped Me to Make New Friends and allow me to connect with the outer World in a creative way.

Through my blog and other writing platforms, I have met numerous like-minded individuals who share same passion for writing. These connections have blossomed into friendships and cultivated a sense of community and support around me.

Writing as a Healer

Beyond being a good-time buddy, writing has been a great help during difficult times as well. It has served as a therapeutic tool and helped me navigate through challenging emotions and situations.

When I faced the heart-wrenching experience of IUD (Intra uterine death of my first born) and recently, the profound loss of my mother, writing became my solace. Writing has helped me cope up with these difficult situations and give me much needed strength to overcome the profound feeling of grief and loss.

In nut shell, writing has been a transformative force in my life. From the playful entries in my childhood diary to the structured articles for newspapers, and now, as a blogger and author, writing has shaped my personality with many vibrant colors and provided me countless opportunities. I am so grateful to the incredible art of writing for been a steadfast companion through the highs and lows of life.

Thanks again to Swarnali for giving me a chance to look back and enjoy those glorious as well as challenging moments. Hope, my loving readers would also enjoy reading my writing journey.

Would love to end the post with the powerful quote from Anne Frank.

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn”.

Your story resonates alot with me as I too wrote for my college magazines and newspapers. From diary writing to writing blogs is a commendable progress. We as bloggers/writers are indeed blessed to find an outlet in writing.

Connect with the Outer World in a Creative Way – I loved this thought Surbhi. I do believe that as writers, we see the world in a different light. And that quote you wrote in the end – courage is reborn – such an apt closure to your journey. It’s not easy to make a career pivot and you did. Kudos to your spirit.

I am enjoying this blog hop as I see myself in every other writer’s story. Diary writing was the start of my writing journey too, and it continues to be my favourite part of writing till date. It’s amazing that you started getting published in prestigious newspapers at an early age, and you got to restart your writing career after moving abroad too. It looks like it was always meant to be. It was nice reading your story, Surbhi.

  • A Rustic Mind

Your professional writing journey began at such a young age. What a feeling of pride and nostalgia it must evoke when you look at your stories and articles published in newspapers and magazines as a mere teenager. From then till now, its no wonder your writing has only improved with time, and also helped you grow as a person. And yes, its hardly surprising that through your downs too, writing has been the hand you held for healing and strength. Sending you all positive vibes and motivation to continue on this path for a long long time

What an amazing saga of transformation, Surbhi. I have read and enjoyed your writing earlier as well. Your post brought a feeling of deja vu because I too began writing in a diary that my mother gave me, wrote through school and college and then moved on to a career of teaching and writing. It is wonderful to see that writing is therapeutic for you and has helped you to cope with tragic situations as well. Here’s to much more writing ahead! Kudos!

You are correct in saying Diary Entry as a 90’s kid’s activity. I instantly went to my childhood when I started journaling as a kid and gradually it became a habit. Later when I was busy in family, I thought I need to do something that makes me happy and there, my passion of writing smiled at me.

  • booknerdsamee
