You might have already heard that swimming is a great form of exercise for kids but do you know apart making your kid physically active, swimming offers plenty of physical, mental and social benefits for kids. Swimming helps in overall development of kids and improve academic performance too.  

This summer, my little one has completed her level 4 of swimming lessons. And I am so happy and proud of her to complete this incredible mile stone. I had observed many amazing benefits of swimming for kids, on a personal level. In this post, I am excited to share this with you all.

Teach water safety skills 

We will start this list with one of the most basic but most important benefits of swimming for kids. Swimming helps in teaching water safety skills to kids which is one of the most essential life skills.  

As per CDC, drowning is one of the major causes of death for kids aged under 1-2 year and it is second leading cause of death for kids aged 5–15-year-old. Though praticising all other important rules of water safety is must for keeping kids safe in water. However, teaching kids swimming can offer a great help. Studies shows, swimming can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%. Swimming helps in removing of fear of water for kids and make them aware about all essential water safety skills. 

Physical benefits 

As mentioned earlier, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for kids. Swimming is a low-intensity workout that helps in burn out calories and also make kids physically active. Practicing swimming involves use of various muscles of body. With regular practice, kids develop muscular strength. Swimming is also great for cardiovascular and lung health. As swimming involves practicing of holding of breath underwater, it helps in improving vital capacity of lung. As another benefit, swimming possesses less risk of muscular injury which is typically associated with other sports or workout.  

Swimming also helps in developing flexibility in the body. Kids develop a flexible body with regular swimming practice.  furthermore, swimming helps in maintaining an ideal body weight for kids. In reduces the risk of childhood obesity and help in Buidling a positive relationship with exercise for kids.

Swimming is great option for improving your kid’s memory and concentration power. Swimming lessons require following of instructions regarding various strokes (back stroke, butterfly, freestyle etc.) when kids learn these different techniques while practicing swimming, it helps in improving their memory and concentration power. Also, swimming requires co-ordination of various parts of body including muscles, breath control etc., so it helps in improving their co-ordinations capability.  

Swimming also helps in building mind-body connection for kids which ultimately improve brain and cognitive functions of kids. Swimming also improves sleep quality of kids. Especially, for young kids and picky eaters, swimming is a best option to utilize energy and improve appetite.

It might be a surprising fact but studies have shown that swimming is a great tool for improving emotional health of kids. Swimming helps in reducing stress and provide amazing benefits for kid’s emotional health. While swimming our brain release endorphin hormone which help in reducing stress level. Endorphin also help in uplifting mood and keep kids happy and positive.  

Social benefits 

Yes, this one is another incredible benefit of swimming for kids. Swimming lessons usually practiced in groups which give a perfect opportunity to socialize kids. With group swimming lessons, kids get a chance to get connected with other kids who possess similar interest. In some cases, swimming can be a great option for introvert and shy kids. With swimming lessons, kids develop a valuable social engagement and make new friends too.  

Academic benefits  

As next, swimming is also helpful in improving your kid’s academic performance. Studies have shown that kids who learn swimming at young age develop better motor skills and achieved their mental and physical milestones earlier than their peers. These kids also perform better in academics and develop great problem-solving skills too.

When they have fun, they want to do it again without any parental force. And this fun filled activity becomes a part of their life as a form of lifelong fitness routine.

    Swimming is one of the necessary life skills that we need to know. Luckily, these days kids have good resources. Both my kids live swimming.and considering the Houston summer, swimming is one such activity that we get to enjoy for a longer duration.

    Swimming is very beneficial, as you have shared. I have hydrophobia and could never go in the water. I had my son in the pool at 4 and my daughter at 2 1/2 itself. I am really glad I did that.

    Oh yes, swimming is one of the best activities for kids. I am waiting for my daughter to turn 7 as that is the age of enrollment in swimming lessons in the nearby swimming club.

    absolutely right ! swimming is one such activity which is not just a form of exercise but a life skill as well and everyone should learn it. better start in early age. as a kid we used to spend our summer vacations swimming in our neighborhood swimming school. i wish to enroll my son there too.

    Swimming surely has many benefits and I really liked you putting across Mental, emotional and Physical benefits. But due to Covid, Swimming training has been stopped here.
