It is week 3 and post 5 of #MyfriendAlexa.  And I am sharing the treatment aspect of diabetes from the last post. If you had missed that part please click here.

There are various home remedies are available that can be used to lower the blood sugar level. What are the top 8 home remedies for diabetes? How to use them? And what are the precautions you should keep, while using home remedies? Read on to know more!

Before using any home remedy for managing your blood sugar level, here are few important things that should be kept in mind.

  • As we all know there is no permanent cure for diabetes.  According to diabetesresearch.org  achieving optimal glucose control remains an unattainable goal for the vast majority of those with diabetes (especially in young adults)
  • And the same thing applies to use home remedies too. Just like conventional treatment, these home remedies also help in maintaining blood sugar level (only). There is no natural substance that can cure diabetes permanently.
  • Do not use any home remedy without making a proper consultation with your doctor. Discuss your diet, exercise schedule and prescribed medication before adding any home remedy to treat diabetes.
  • Always use home remedies as an addition to conventional treatment. Never rely on only home remedies (and other alternative therapies) for treating diabetes.
  • Each natural substance has their action and properties. Sometimes these home remedies may cause allergic reactions or side effects in some susceptible individual.  So, it is equally important to use these with proper precautions to avoid any adverse effects.

Fenugreek seed

Fenugreek seed is one of the well known home remedy for treating diabetes. (or methi dana) has amazing properties and health benefits. It is great for digestion, joint pain, hair problems and diabetes. A recent scientific study  has confirmed that fenugreek seeds can be used as an adjuvant in the control of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the form of soaked in hot water.  It has hypoglycemic properties and can lower your blood sugar level naturally.

How to use it?

There are a few ways to use it.

  1.  Sock the fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight. And drink this water is the morning along with seeds.
  2.  Use the 1-2 teaspoons of fenugreek seed powder in the morning along with Luke warm water or milk.
  3.  You may make fenugreek seeds as a vegetable (mixed with routine spices and little oil) to add this in your diet.

Precautions

Usually, this home remedy has no side effects but in some people, it may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, diarrhoea and stomach pain. In some people, as a side effect, it may produce respiratory symptoms. It is also not a safe option for pregnant and breastfeeding women.  If you had any of this issue, consult your doctor before using it.

Bitter gourd

Bitter gourd is one of the well-known substances that used as a home remedy for treating diabetes. It has the amazing quality to treat diabetes naturally.  According to diabetes.co.uk, bitter gourd contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties including charantin. Charantin is confirmed to have a blood glucose lowering effect.

How to use it?

  • Take 2-3 bitter gourds, and discard all the seeds. Cut these into finer pieces. Grind these pieces by adding water (either in juicer or grinder). Place a wire mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a bowl.  Pour the juice through the strainer and remove any solid pieces of bitter gourd. Bitter gourd juice is ready to drink. You can take 1 glass of juice before the main meal. And it definitely works great in lowering blood sugar level naturally.
  • Second, you can use 1-2 tsp bitter gourd powder 2 times a day. Nowadays this powder is easily available at any Indian grocery store. It is the easy and convenient way to add this amazing natural substance in your routine diet.
  • Third, you can make any dishes (bitter gourd vegetable or curry) 3-4 times in a week to increase bitter gourd intake in your routine diet.

Cinnamon

I am sure you had already heard about the amazing healing properties of Cinnamon. Cinnamon has great health benefits. It helps in lowering the blood glucose level. it is very often used as a home remedy for treating diabetes. It also helps in maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol level naturally.  Cinnamon is a rich source of anti-oxidants and decreases the oxidative stress. This is the reason; it works great in reducing blood sugar level naturally.

It has two varieties.

  • Ceylon- it is also called “True Cinnamon” and it is quite expensive.
  • Cassia- it is less expensive and more commonly used. It is easily available too.

How to use it?

  • It can be used either as a form of warm concoction or powder.
  • Take 3-4 cinnamon sticks and boil these sticks in 2 glass of water for 20 minutes. When the mixture comes down to half, strain this. Drink this mixture daily until you see improvement.
  • Add 1-2 tsp of cinnamon powder in a glass of warm water, stir it properly. And drink it daily.

Precaution

Use Ceylon cinnamon for treating diabetes. It contains more oxidants, thus provide more benefits. Another side, Cassia cinnamon may cause some adverse side effects too, if used in large quantity.

Amla or Indian gooseberry

Amla or Indian gooseberry is one of nature’s best gifts to mankind. It has amazing health benefits and uses for the various system of the body.

Along with other health benefits, Amla has amazing anti-diabetic properties. and used as a home remedy for diabetes.  It can be used to lower the blood sugar level naturally. It is rich in vitamin c and promotes proper functioning of the pancreas.  By this way, it helps in reducing blood sugar level naturally.

How to use it?

Take fresh amla fruit and discard seeds. Add little water and grind this into a finer paste. Strain the mixture with the strainer (or with clean water). Mixed 2 tsp of Amla juice in a glass of clean water. Drink it daily.

As an alternative, you can take amla power too.

Precaution

In some people, Amla may cause acidity and other allergic reaction. So be careful while using it.

Jamun or black plum (Syzagium zambolicum)

Black plum is another excellent option to control your blood glucose level naturally. Its leaves, fruits, and seeds all parts are useful for treating diabetes. It contains anthocyanins, ellagic acid and hydrolysable tannins.  These substances have the hypoglycemic effect and help in reducing blood sugar naturally.

How to use it?

  • The first and easy way to consume the fresh fruit whenever it is available. It helps a lot in reducing blood sugar level naturally.
  • Second, it can be used in powdered form. Take 1-2 tsp of jamun powder daily 2 times a day. It should be used on regular basis to see the positive results.

Mango leaves

Scientific study shows tender and soft leaves of mango have great potential in reducing blood sugar level naturally.

How to use it?

  • Soak the 8-10 soft and tender mango leaves in water overnight.  Filter this water in the morning and drink this empty stomach.
  • As an alternative you can use mango leave power too, to get the desired results. It should be used twice daily.

Curry leaves

Like mango leaves, curry leaves also had amazing curing properties. It helps in reducing the blood sugar level naturally. It also helps in regulating blood pressure level and cholesterol level.

How to use it?

  • Chew fresh 8-10 soft, fresh curry leaves in the morning (on empty stomach).
  • Try to add curry leaves in different dishes (in a salad, curry)

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is one of the most amazing natural substances. It has so many great health benefits. Aloe Vera has anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. And work wonderfully in maintains blood glucose level naturally.  Scientific studies suggested that Aloe Vera may help HBA1C level in people with type 2 diabetes.

How to use it?

It can be used by various methods. Either you can use Aloe Vera juice or mixed aloe Vera gel with other substances (like turmeric or bay leaves). Consume this mixture or juice twice daily before lunch and dinner.

Conclusion

All these home remedies are great and have amazing blood sugar lowering properties. But you have to be careful while using it. Dose, the frequency of repeat ion and good results depends on individual factors and may vary from person to person. It is best to take professional advice before using it.
