As a mom of two teens, I have faced this issue a lot. I still remember those days, when I had a hard time to complete a planned activity with my girls just because of their poor concentration level.

Of course, easily distracted kids are challenging for parents to handle but just like other skills and abilities, we can work with our kids to help them improve their concentration.

Average Attention Span Chart

Parenting experts suggested that for finding an average attention span of your kids, you should multiply your kid’s age to either 2 or 3. That means, a 3-year-old kids will have an average attention span of 6-9 minutes.  Understanding the average attention span for different age groups is a fundamental step. Here’s a brief chart:

  • 3 years old: 6-9 minutes
  • 4-5 years old: 12-18 minutes
  • 6 years old: 15-20 minutes

These are general guidelines, and individual variations should be considered. It is crucial for parents to be attuned to their child’s unique needs and adapt accordingly.

Rule Out the Possibility of ADD and ADHD

Before addressing concentration challenges, it is imperative to rule out potential underlying issues, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For younger kids, you can select puzzles with fewer pieces and then, gradually you can increase the complexity as their skills evolve. The act of fitting pieces together not only improves focus but also enhances problem-solving skills.

Memory games stimulate the brain and enhance concentration. You can create a memory card game with pictures of animals or objects, placing the cards face down and encouraging the child to match pairs by remembering the locations of the cards.

Story-Based Games

This one is my personal favorite. And I have played this game with my girls in various formats. Such as you can create a collaborative storytelling game where each participant adds a sentence to build a story. Alternatively, you can use storybooks with interactive elements, and ask questions about the plot to keep the child engaged.

Sequencing Activities

This one is age-old method to keep kids engaged and best part, it helps in improving concentration power too. You can assign various age-appropriate sequencing tasks (even routine household tasks like arranging utensils in a particular order) to develop organizational skills and concentration power in kids.

Time-Based Tasks or Activities

As next option, you can Introduce time-based activities to instills a sense of structure and discipline in your kids. You can use timers for short tasks like completing a puzzle or drawing a picture and the, gradually increase the duration as the child becomes more comfortable with the concept of time.

Physical Activities like Dance-Based Routines, yoga routine etc.

Physical exercises like yoga, dance routines, can enhance concentration and focus in kids. you can enjoy this as a family activity too. These activities not only boosts physical stamina but also engages the child’s mind in memorizing the routine.

Do not forget the Importance of Healthy Diet and Good Night Sleep

Last but not the least, do not forget the importance of a well-balanced diet and sufficient sleep. These two things play a crucial role in improving concentration power in kids.  Ensure your child receives nutritious meals, including brain-boosting foods like fruits and vegetables. Additionally, maintain a consistent sleep schedule to support optimal cognitive function.
